Ambassador Edward Peck is an Advisory Board Member for the Center on Peace and Liberty at the Independent Institute, was Deputy Director of the Cabinet Task Force on Terrorism in the Reagan White House and former Chief of Mission in Iraq, and was in Jerusalem and the West Bank as an international observer of the presidential elections in 2005, and in Gaza for the Legislative Council elections in 2006
Ambassador Edward Peck is a retired career United States diplomat who served thirty-two-years in the U.S. Foreign Service. He served as Chief of Mission in Baghdad (Iraq 1977 to 1980) and later held senior posts in Washington and abroad. He also served as a Foreign Service Officer in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt, and as Ambassador in Mauritania. He served as deputy director of the White House Task Force on Terrorism in the Reagan Administration. He is president of Foreign Services International, a consulting firm that works with governments, businesses and educational institutions across the world.
Edward Peck argued against invading Iraq prior to the March 2003 invasion. He argued, in part, “when you take out Saddam Hussein, the key question you have to ask then is, what happens after that? And we don’t have a clue. Nobody knows, but it’s probably going to be bad. And a lot of people are going to be very upset about that, because that really is not written into our role in this world is to decide who rules Iraq.”
admin Political Ponderings BARACK!
This was first published 6/08 in the reggae festival E guide. In these articles I try very hard to remain nuetral. I’m voting for Obama! No doubt!
I don’t usually like to write down my political views, but the current change that is occuring in the government of the United States of America is facinating. For those of us living in North America, we have been so fortunate to pursue our dreams and happiness. We have freedom and we desire the world to share in it. Yet, in the last six years or so, the “War on Terror” has cost much. It has cost many lives, everyone knows this has been a trajedy. Most of all, it has cost us our reputation on many levels. We have lost respect in the global community, but there is the hope of change on the horizon. In this current Presidential race, voting trends have shown that we are a diverse and complex people. If you focus on our possible new leadership you will quickly notice…it’s more open than ever before.
There is a woman, a man of African descent, a former prisoner of war, an evangelical preacher, and a Mormon businessman.
However you spin it, these are new choices for America. These are all people that have overcome stereotypes and succeeded. Think about it…Not long ago women in America couldn’t even vote. At one point in our history, it was authorized by the government to shoot on sight any Mormon(LDS) in U.S. territory. The Great Salt Lake Basin became a refuge for the Church of Latter Day Saints(LDS). Everyone is aware of the stain that slavery has left upon the face of this country. So to think that son of bi-racial parents who was raised by a single mother, would some day rise to become a Harvard Law professor, community organizer, and possible President of the United States. Barack Obama has become the incarnation of the American dream. Consider that just a few weeks ago our current administration was trying to explain why they destroyed the evidence of waterboarding and justified the use of torture and now a former Vietnam P.O.W. John McCain who opposed them is the front-runner in thier own party. I am confident that any of these people has a chance to lead America in a new and positive direction.
Please pray for these men and women that they may accomplish bridging the gap of discontent we have experienced between the U.S.A. and the world.
One Love, James Curt
